c.1969 Nomura, Space Robot X-70 (Tulip Head) in Original Box

Superb example of Nomura's classic battery operated Space Robot X-70, a.k.a Tulip Head Robot complete with its original box plus all four original inserts. All actions work perfectly and consistently. Both the robot and box are in excellent condition.

Space Robot is primarily lithographed tinplate and plastic. He has the unique ability to split his head into three "petals" while simultaneously lighting and rotating his "cranial" contents.

  • Turn him on and he advances forwards with a lumbering movement; with his legs moving in alternate directions.
  • Flashing lights illuminate his neck while producing a soft metallic sound.
  • Suddenly he stops.
  • The top of his head begin to illuminate and flash.
  • His head then splits open in a petal-like "tulip" fashion into three pie-slice sections.
  • This reveals a central "brain" stalk with a triple lens camera and an illuminated television "screen". A lunar landscape with the planet Saturn is shown.
  • Immediately after the petals opens the entire head section including the camera and screen begins to rotate clockwise.
  • While rotating it emits a loud brrring sound.
  • Three complete revolutions are made with it stopping in exactly the same position it started, face forward.
  • The sound then stops, the flashing lights blink off, and the three heads sections snap closed.
  • He starts to walk forward again and the cycle is repeated.

These complex and absorbing actions account for its status as one of the most sought after Japanese built robots.  It's interesting that while researching its year of manufacture dates were given which ranged anywhere from the mid-1950's to the mid-1980's. However, it was actually produced towards the end of the classic toy robot era (c.1969 - 1970).

The box features a towering, full panel vertical illustration of Tulip Head. The perspective looking up from its feet gives it a sense of awe and power. One of the side panels shows a close-up of the head sections fully extended with operating camera and television screen. The opposite panel shows a schematic of its multiple light, movement, and sound actions. It comes with its original box bottom and all four original cardboard inserts.

Best of all..... it works great!
